Biographical Sketch
The Reverend Malcolm Roberts III
Chaplain (Colonel) U.S. Army Ret.
Malcolm Roberts III was born 27 November 1943 in Camp White,
Oregon. He received an associate degree from Mitchell
Junior College, New London, Connecticut, and a bachelor of
arts in English Literature from Windham College, Putney,
Vermont, and a master of divinity from Virginia Theological
Seminary, Alexander, Virginia.
The Reverend Roberts entered the Army in February 1967,
completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and advanced
individual training at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was
commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor in December 1967,
after completing Armor Officer Candidate School. He served
as an Armored Cavalry Platoon Leader, Troop Executive
Officer, and Troop Commander. Chaplain Roberts also
commanded three companies in the Armored School Brigade and
was an instructor in the Maintenance Department of the
United Stated Army Armor School.
The Reverend Roberts left the Army in 1972 to attend
Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained by the
Episcopal Church and served two churches in Wallingford and
Yalesville, Connecticut before returning to active duty as
an Army Chaplain. During The Reverend Roberts’ seminary
education, he served in the 310th Theater Army
Area Command as the Nuclear Effects Officer and the
Command’s Unit Training Officer. While in parish ministry
for three and a half years, he served as a Military Liaison
Officer to the United States Military Academy, West Point,
New York.
The Reverend Roberts returned to active duty in November
1978 serving as a Battalion and Brigade Chaplain in the 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky,
then as the Assistant V Corps Chaplain, Frankfurt, Germany.
He completed a one year residency in Clinical Pastoral
Education at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, remaining on
staff in various positions. He was then assigned to the
office of the Training and Doctrine Command Chaplain in July
1990 as an action officer for Force Structure and
Mobilization, and then as Chief of Operations and Plans.
Chaplain Roberts’ previous assignment was as the Assistant
Commandant of the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School from
July 1994 until May 1998. His last assignment was as the
Chief of the Department of Ministry and Pastoral Care,
Walter Reed Medical Center.
His military education includes Armor Officer Candidate
School, Motor Officer Course, Chaplain Officer Basic and
Advanced Courses, Air Assault School, Military Comptrollers
Course, Clinical Pastoral Education, Command and General
Staff Course and Force Development Officers Course.
Awards and decorations include The Legion of Merit (1OLC),
Meritorious Service Medal (3OLC), The Army Commendation
Medal (1OLC) and the Army Achievement Medal.
He retired from the Army in February 2005 after more that 31
years of active service. Upon retirement he and his wife
served a year in the Anglican Diocese of Belize. He served
as the priest-in-charge of Saint Joseph’s Anglican Church in
Punta Gorda. He is now serving Peace Episcopal Church in New
Bern North Carolina. Peace is one of the newest missions in
the Diocese of East Carolina.
The Reverend Roberts and his wife Mary, have two children,
Jonathan and Mary Lamar and two grandchildren Reagan and
Peyton.
